Butterfly Birthday Cake

I am sure you have been wondering how the final butterfly cake actually turned out. I had quite the learning process going on with my first and second cake. I think that the shape of the first cake looks the most like a butterfly but the decorating of it was a little scary if you ask me. The second cake I did a little better. So here it the final and latest version of the butterfly cake.... Ready??? Please be kind...

So what do you see when you look at this cake?? I will tell you what I saw when I took this photo. I saw a happy bat. Mickey saw a happy butterfly so I guess that is all that matters. She had a wonderful birthday. I promise to come back tomorrow and tell you all about it and the week of celebration!

I hope that you have a Happy New Year!

Happy Birthday -- Mickey

I wanted to share Mickey's year in pictures with you all! Have a great day!

UPDATE: This is kind of long and I now uploaded the right version.

Tinker Bell

A few weeks ago we watched Tinker Bell the movie. It was an okay movie, not one that I think that everyone must run out and see, but it is cute.

Around the same time we watched the movie we sang "Jingle Bells" in Kindermusik. It was pretty fun as we had bells that we got to play and sing our song.

Now fast forward to today. Mickey got her cow bell ornanment (the one she picked out herself for this year) off the tree and starting singing "Tinker Bell" to the tune of "Jingle Bells". So we have a new song over here. I kind of like it.

Our Great Protectors

Here is a shot that I took of our two dogs Sandy and Sierra. They are our great protectors of our home and land and of course the great neighborhood beyond. Their most important job is to be Mickey's best friends. Sometimes I wonder if they truly enjoy having a almost 3 year old in the house is their idea of fun but I think that they love her too.

Fun with Flour

This is one of my favorite pictures of Mickey helping in the kitchen. My little girl loves flour! She loves to eat it raw not real sure why. She loves the mess that it creates. If there is flour involved so must Mickey. Silly girl. I love how much she enjoys being in the kitchen, even when she isn't being as much of a help as she thinks she is. I wouldn't trade those moments. It makes me become more creative in finding the jobs that she can accomplish AND make a mess AND have fun.

Christmas Pictures

I have been trying to take our annual Christmas picture. We have been doing a family photo and that was the plan this year. We tried and failed twice and I decided to go a different route. I put up a background and put Mickey in her Christmas/Birthday dresses from Grammie Syl and went to snapping. I had fun but at time Mickey just wanted to get it over with. She was a good sport throughout most of it. Here are a couple that I like but didn't make it on our Christmas card. Hope you enjoy!

I like the one to the side here, but it looks like she has a black eye. But I still the love the wonder that is seen in her eyes. I think that is the best part of being a child the wonder of experiencing new things and finding pure joy in it!

Proud of My Mickey

My Mickey made me a proud and happy momma today. She doesn't do well when I leave her at the house with Daddy and sometimes with Grammie Syl. A while back we checked out a book from the library titled, "Momma ALWAYS comes home". We read and reread this book many times. Today, I just needed a break and decided today would be a good day to get my hair cut. So I told Mickey this morning that "Momma was going to work today". She has the concept down of Daddy going to work so we have used this when I have needed to go away for a little bit. She cried and told me "No Momma, Mickey go to work". So I wasn't sure that when the time came for me to go that she was going to take it very well. The time came and I told her I was going to work. She cried for a little bit and then went to Daddy and she was comforted. A few minutes later she seemed to be doing well and telling us that "Momma was going to work". I left to get into the car after hugging her and telling her I was going to come back, because Momma always comes home. She waved to me and all was well. Her and her daddy had a great time together. I had a good time getting my hair cut. Little blessings. :)

Anything Princess

It is well known that Mickey has a fashion sense all her own. Lately she has been a liking to her princess pajamas. It is sometimes the ONLY thing that she will wear. I have been having a struggle getting her to wear something warm. She has also flat out refused to wear her jacket. This has been a struggle that has been frustrating for me.

So last week we went to the Hobby Lobby and foun some iron-ons. Then we got to work and she made her shirt and also decorated her jacket. She was very impressed and just had to check them out in the mirror and of course she had to have her picture taken in them. It has been so much easier to get her to wear other things now. Although we have still had struggles with her jacket but hopefully that will get less and less since we are officially in the cold season!

Christmas Tree Lighting

Tonight we went to see our city's lighting of the Christmas tree. We enjoyed our journey out. It was beautiful the downtown mall with luminaries on the pathway. They also had vendors who were selling their arts and crafts.

Then Mickey spotted the horse drawn trolleys. She was so excited that we decided to stay and catch a ride. We saw the signs that stated where they went and thought it would take us near where we had parked. So we waited for the horses to come and pick us up. Mickey was so excited and enjoyed every minute of her trip. They told us that this would not be a round trip ride and we would have to get off on one of the next two stops.

So off on our trip we began. Suddenly we were going in the wrong direction than what we thought we were going. We decided to get off on the first stop and hopefully catch the next trolley and take us back to where we started from. We waited and waited and waited. While we were waiting we struck up a conversation with one of the ladies also waiting in line. She tells us where we are and that is just 3 blocks to where we need to be.

Jeff and I decided to walk back to our car and not wait for the horses. Which I think is a good idea. But remember the lady told us it was just 3 blocks away. It turns out it was probably 5 plus the extra walk back to our car. We made it even carrying Mickey the whole way (we forgot the stroller at home). We were sure happy to see our car.

So we need to remember that we need to know where we are headed before we get into another horse drawn trolley. But we had fun!

Please Pray

I am asking you to pray for a friend of mine little baby. His name is Owen. He is going into surgery tomorrow at 7 am Eastern time. Please pray for the doctors, for Owen, for his momma and daddy. My friend's name is Dara.

Our "New" Christmas Tradition

I have been looking for an advent calendar to use with Mickey. I was disappointed because all I found was Santa calendars and I just didn't want one with Santa on it. So in my search I found a book that I am loving. It is the Usborne Advent Nativity Book. Each day you read the story of Jesus being born and each day the child gets to set up one more piece of the Nativity. I am a collector of sorts with Nativity sets and remember the joy of seeing the ones that my grandmother and my great grandmother had. So this is just my cup of tea. It is just right for small hands and curious little ones to manage and take ownership of. This one is all hers and she is clearly enjoying it. At the end of the Christmas season when we put all of our stuff away, the Nativity pieces will all go back into the book for safe keeping for next year.

Thanksgiving Pictures

Our trip to Grammie Syl's house was short lived. Mickey just wasn't resting and very active which made for one overtired little girl. But we did manage to have a great Thanksgiving.

Mickey was excited to help with Thanksgiving dinner. I was shocked that she actually touched the Turkey. She was all into helping with the preparation and got really into it. She is much braver than her momma as I don't think that I would have touched a turkey at her age.

Before my mom and Mickey started with the turkey they had to have their morning coffee. It is a ritual when we go home they have to share coffee together. Mickey gets her chocolate milk in a coffee cup and Grammie gets her real kind and they sit and drink together. It is quite the site.

Wow! It is the last day of the month and I have reached my goal of blogging everyday for a month. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to reach my goal, but I did it. It feels good to set out a goal and actually reach it.

So what am I taking away from this experience? I have learned that I blog because it makes me happy. It makes me stop and take a look at what is going on around me and find the blessings or the little stories that I want to remember. I suppose that in a way it is my way of keeping a scrapbook of this time in my life. There are moments and sometimes days that I am not appreciating the time that I have with my precious little one because I am stressed out or maybe just tired out, but the blog has helped me open up to the blessings around me. I needed to take the time out and search for the blessings because as the song goes I'm "Gonna miss this".

So now what? I have reached my goal of blogging everyday for a month, so what now? I am going to blog more often. December is such a busy month so I don't think that I am going to try to go for 2 months in a row but who knows I may try it again in the New Year. Thank you for taking this journey with me!

Blog Type?

I ran across this typealyzer from one of the blogs that I read. You put in your blog site and it determines what kind of blog you have. I did it just to see what it came up with. Here are my results.

ESFP - The Performers

The entertaining and friendly type. They are especially attuned to pleasure and beauty and like to fill their surroundings with soft fabrics, bright colors and sweet smells. They live in the present moment and don´t like to plan ahead - they are always in risk of exhausting themselves.

The enjoy work that makes them able to help other people in a concrete and visible way. They tend to avoid conflicts and rarely initiate confrontation - qualities that can make it hard for them in management positions.

Interesting: It also said that I used the sensing and feeling parts of my brain. I find this fascinating because this is what personality type tests usually say about me.

So what does this say about your blog (if you have one) and did they get right or wrong. Let me know.

Sometimes in our hurried life we forget to take a moment or two to really reflect on all the blessings are really be thankful for those. I am a worrier and have been my entire life. Maybe I should do something about that? It is easy to worry about how we are going to pay those bills. To worry about how we are as parents. The list grows and is long. But I am reminded that I need to trust in the Lord and not worry.

So today I am going to focus on what I am thankful for.

1. I am thankful that I have been blessed to marry my best friend. I count on his friendship throughout life's obstacles. I am thankful that he is my partner in our journey through life. He is my biggest supporter. He is also a wonderful daddy to our little Mickey. Words cannot describe the multitude reasons that I am thankful for him.

2. I am thankful for my daughter. She is the most precious gift that the Lord could have ever given me. I love her laughter!

3. I am thankful for friendships. I have some really close friendships that I have had for years. Some of those are near me while others are scattered around the country. I also have new friendships that I have discovered through being a momma and I am blessed to have these wonderful ladies in my life.

4. I am thankful for the health of my child. I know all too well that not every parent has a child that has no health problems. I see the fears and struggles that they go through.

I have so many things that I am thankful for but will continue writing about it on another day.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I am enjoying my day with my family, my mom, grandmother, Jeff and Mickey. I am looking forward to lots of good food. My mom is a great cook and so I know that we are going to eat well today.

Some traditions in our neck of the woods.

1. Mom gets up early to put the turkey in.
2. She cuts up the stuff for the dressing. We used to do the whole stuff the turkey until we figured out that no one particularly cared for the stuffing in the turkey. Took us years to figure this out.
3. Eat some dressing for breakfast and it has to be in a little bowl. Maybe even have a slice of pie.
4. Be kind of lazy throughout the day. Eventually take a shower.
5. Get the other sides of the meal together. We will each take a dish that we will prepare. My mom will make her red chili. Yummy and so good on the mashed potatoes that we will eat. Who needs gravy??
6. Eat, eat, eat!
7. Put in a movie and just hang out.

:) Hope you have a great Thanksgiving day with your family!

To Grandmother's House We Go

Over the rivers and through the woods to Grammie Syl's house we go. We are off to enjoy Thanksgiving with my mom today. I am looking forward to being home. My grandmother is also joining us so that is another blessing for us to enjoy.

I hope to take a lot of pictures to share with you when we get back home. Jeff will be joining us for a part of the trip. He hasn't been back for an extended stay since Mickey's 1st Thanksgiving. My how times have changed. That was back in the days when Mickey was into playing dress up in her food rather than actually having a taste. I am curious how much of the food she is going to enjoy. There are going to be her favorites there as well so I am not a bit worried.

I hope you and your family or friends will enjoy the day together.

Quick Post

I am currently trying to get ready for Thanksgiving. Little Mickey is excited that we are going to be able to see Grammie Syl tomorrow. I am ready for a nap, but I don't see that in my future. Thanksgiving is probably my mom's favorite holiday, since she gets to cook. I like it because I don't have to cook and I get yummy food. I help with the cooking but it is not my show.

Thanks to my friend for saving this picture for me. She was able to save a memory!

I just set up my phone so I can blog while I am away from my computer. So this is a test to see if this actually works.

God's Mountains

This last week I have been teaching Mickey "My God is So Big". For those of you who don't know this song here are the lyrics.

My God is so big,

So strong and so mighty,

There's nothing my God cannot do.

My God is so big,

So strong and so mighty,

There's nothing my God cannot do.

The mountains are His,

The rivers are His,

The stars are His handiwork too.

My God is so big,

So strong and so mighty,

There's nothing my God cannot do.

So yesterday when we decided to take a trip up to the mountains, Mickey was excited. She kept telling us that we were going to "God's Mountains". Singing this song all week was a simple thing to do but it was fun to teach her something that holds so much truth to it. To put a treasure in her heart that she can go back when life seems big and overwhelming that we serve a God that is big, strong and mighty. As well as a loving and forgiving God. We are truly blessed.

Trip to the Mountains

We decided today to go for a day trip to the mountains. We had a lot of fun. We went with the intent on taking some family pictures for a Christmas card idea. Well, that didn't really work, but we had some fun anyway. Somehow we didn't learn or just plain forgot how to use the timer so that we could all be in the picture at the same time.

On the way home from the mountains, Mickey was tired and slowly falling asleep. At one point on our way home Mickey declared "Momma I need a hug in the hand". She wanted me to turn so that she could hold my hand. Soon she fell asleep and got a few minutes rest before we got home.

Here is a shot that Jeff took that I really like. It is nice to get a picture that I like with my daughter which doesn't happen a whole lot. So I count today as a success and look forward to going again with a little more preparation. :)

Create a Wordle

I ran across this website called Wordle. It takes words and turns it into word art. The fun this about this is it will take the words on your blog and create an image for you to enjoy. The other fun thing is you can use a few words and put them together in an art form. Here is one that I made from using words on this blog. :)

Rocketship Run

One of Mickey's favorite singers put out a new cd last month I think. We haven't picked up our copy yet, but believe me when I say that we are going to get it. Mickey already has her favorite song on it. Laurie Berkner new CD is Rocketship Run. I can't tell you how many times she has burst out singing this song and how many times we have to go and find this video on youtube. We first heard it on Laurie's webcast last month and we have been singing it nonstop for that long. So I thought for our Friday fun we would share it with you and hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Music Class

Mickey has been in Kindermusik for about a year and half. I love taking her and seeing her grow and mature. The first semester or two she was into doing her own thing. Now she has grown and is a full participant. We are "supposed" to do the class with mom and child. Mickey usually takes on the role of the mom and does the class with Sparky. She loves following the instructions of her teacher. She is quite the little helper, in her class. She often takes on the role of greeter or teacher, encouraging her classmates on. Since I am singing songs on my own watching her do her own thing I can sometimes get a picture or two. :)

Mickey's Babies

Mickey has not be interested in her baby dolls, at least not until recently. She has a couple of baby dolls that she would play with a little bit. Which translates to removing all the clothes on them. I am not sure what her fascination was that all her dolls could not have clothes on them. Any doll of any kind as soon as she got her hands on them she would strip them of all clothing.

So imagine my surprise when on Monday we were playing in her room and took a liking to her two baby dolls and she wanted to PUT CLOTHES ON. She loved getting them dressed. She took care of them shushing them when they cried. Put them to sleep when they were sleepy and reassured them that she was right there and need not worry. We found an old basket that I collected throughout the years and made it into a bed for her babies. She is quite the little mother taking care of her young.

She asked me to take a picture of her with her babies. She is quite proud of her little family. And I am happy to report that as of today they are still clothed. I am enjoying her new imagination that she is developing.

Tuckered Out

We are still in the "No Nap" category in our house. On Sunday, Mickey did take a short nap as she was terribly grumpy and just needed the sleep. She was out in less than 10 minutes for her nap and a little longer for bed. We are slowly working out the schedule that we have during the day. Amazing, I feel like I am getting a little more accomplished during the day.

On Friday she was a little worn out as she sat on the chair resting. I got up to go to the kitchen and this is what I found when I came back. This is unheard of as my child has never just randomly fallen asleep anywhere. We are having better nights sleep which is always a plus. From the looks of things it seems as if we are going to continue on this no nap track.

My Little Chef

Mickey loves to help in the kitchen. I think that she is a little cook. I usually try to make sure that she gets to help in some way with our meals. She is very comfortable in the kitchen and always has to have her own spatula, spoon, or whisk so that she can help out with meals. I hope that she grows up to be a confident in her cooking skills and abilities. She is always very excited to tell her daddy that she helped make dinner. How great is that?! I also think that her helping in the kitchen has helped her try new foods. She has not been a fan of celery. During a night where she was "helping" momma cut up veggies for fried rice. Her job is to pick up the veggies and put them in a bowl so I can use them when I am ready. Anyway, this night she reached for the celery and started eating and said "Yummy celery!" I was a little surprised but glad that at least when she is helping out in the kitchen she is willing to try new things. It becomes a different story when she sits down to eat. She wants the food that she has already deemed okay.

Christmas Music

It seems like the Christmas season starts earlier and earlier every year. The stores bring out all the holiday decorations, the toy catalogs are being sent to our house, Christmas music being played in the stores. All of it seems a little bit forced when it starts happening before and right after Halloween (in OCTOBER!).

Today, while I was running errands, I turned on the local radio station and heard Christmas music. I changed the channel. It is just not time for the music to come out. I like Christmas music but there is only so much that I can handle and not this early.

I remember years ago, I was eating lunch with a good friend, Jan. This particular place was a 50's diner, where you expected to hear, um 50's music. I loved this place, they had the shakes that are still the best that I have ever had. But will tell you about that another time. Anyways, we were enjoying our meal and then we heard it..... Christmas music. Jan, looked up and said "It's not Christmas yet!"

Even though I like Christmas music and have some of favorites, I am saying, "it's not Christmas yet!". I would much rather enjoy the season that I am in and not be pushed to be thinking about Christmas right now.

Another Butterfly

We are still practicing at making a butterfly birthday cake for Mickey's 3rd birthday. I am simplifying my idea and think that I have something workable. Today I tried out part of the simplified idea of a butterfly and I like the result.

Mickey and I went to Hobby Lobby and found a knife to put the icing on and it worked much better. I also found pre-made fondant. I may just have to try that since part of the overwhelming part of using fondant is making it. So let's see what our next practice cake.

One of the cutest things about making the cake today was Mickey. She clapped and said "A butterfly momma, you did it! Yay!" I love the encouragement that I get from my little one. :)

Day Three

We have now completed day three of no naps. I think that she is doing fine, but I am struggling with settling into a new routine. She seems to be thriving in her new no nap status, while I am wondering if this is the best thing for the both of us. I think that it is. The tension is gone between us because we are not fighting the whole sleep issue a couple of times a day and she is not waking up from her nap grumpy. All though my down time is no longer there and I long for some down time. I get to spend more time with hubby at night, but since I am still adjusting I am exhausted. Maybe we will go and lay down for a time and see how she does with that.

Too Many Pictures??

Before Mickey was born we invested in a digital camera. We are both love to take pictures. We thought that the birth of our new child would be a great time to upgrade. It was an investment that we have not regretted. We have taken a lot of pictures. I just looked at my file and it says we have 7710 photos already taken. Most of those photos have been of our very photogenic child. Mickey has since got a camera of her own. It is her play camera. I think someday when she is older we will get her very own camera but I think that she is a little young yet to fully understand how to take pictures. But this is a common site. She points her camera at me and says "Smile please, smile" it is just too cute. But it makes me wonder if we have taken too many pictures? I am thankful for all the pictures that we have taken and am glad that we have taken them.

No Nap

Today we tried something different and tried no nap. So far Mickey is doing well. So let's hope that we have the result that we are looking for, which is an earlier bedtime. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that she doesn't fight bedtime tonight. We have been having struggles of her fighting nap and bedtime and it was just wearing on me. Let's hope that we are on to something or that I can find something that works if this doesn't.

Update: So Mickey didn't take a nap all day. About 8 she began to get tired and she was fading fast. So I took her to bed and laid down with her. It took her 10 minutes maybe 15 and she was asleep. Let's see how the night goes and tomorrow. I am hoping we may have found something that works for her.

Our Pumpkin

When we went to the corn maze we picked up out our pumpkin. This year I didn't think that we were ready to do the whole carving a pumpkin. Maybe it is because I am not so excited to stick my hand in the goo and create a mess. Last year I found this really neat kit that is made by the Mr. Potato Head people but it is made for your pumpkin. It is fun, silly, simple and best of all no mess to deal with. Last year Mickey wasn't into helping with the pumpkin but this year it was a different story, she loved putting the face on. I showed her the picture from last year and she just had to pose again with her pumpkin this year. I loved it. Maybe next year we will venture into carving a pumpkin but I enjoy the Mr. Potato Head pumpkin. :)

Pride Band

Last Monday we went on a field trip of sorts with Mickey's music class. All the children that attend music class were invited to spend some time with the college marching band. It was a blast. Mickey loves music and this was right up her alley.

We went to this last year also so I was excited to see how she would this year. She loved the instruments from afar this year. The loudness of being in with the marching band was a little much for her. But love it from a distance was great. It was fun to see her pretending to play each of the instruments. Maybe she will be in the band when she gets older? A mom can dream can't she?

Cake Wreck?

I did my practice cake of the butterfly cake yesterday and today. It was a challenge. It makes me so glad that I didn't try it as my first attempt to serve on her birthday. I have a long way to go to make it look like a butterfly instead of icing creating havoc on a cake. Mickey helped with placing the candies on the cake. She is so excited about having a birthday cake. She is constantly asking for her birthday and was even singing "Happy Birthday" last night.

Looking at my cake makes me think of a blog that I found recently, Cake Wrecks. This lady gets submissions of cakes that people have ordered from bakeries that are not what they should be or just really odd. It is a good site to go to if you just need a laugh, or need to feel better about your own personal cake wreck.

Cake Decorating

I have been dreaming up ideas on what kind of cake to do for Mickey's 3rd birthday. I can't believe that she is almost 3, where has the time gone?

At first I thought I would do something with fondant. I got a recipe from a lady I know who does some amazing cakes. I did a little more research and decided that it was a little more than I am able to do right now and don't want the added stress.

So yesterday, I was browsing the web and looking for a special cake pan. I thinking some fun character or princess. I was amazed at how many there are out there. I am still not convinced this is the way to go. I want something that is going to be fun and yet not going to cost me a whole lot to make.

Then I found Betty Crocker's site. They have a section that is all about cakes, using the pans that you already own. I found a cute butterfly cake that I am going to attempt to make as my practice cake to see if I can really do this. What I love about this site is that it gives me video instructions on how to do a particular design. I am so much better at creating things if I have a step by step guide showing me. So let's see what I actually come up with for a birthday cake, but I think that we are going to have fun with it.

Marriage and Food

I love listening to the perspectives on life with my grandmother. She has insight that only 79 almost 80 years can give you. While I was home we were talking about marriage and the compromises you have to make to make it a successful one. That each person comes into the marriage with their own way of doing things but if you are going to have a good marriage then you can't stay the same.

She gave an example of cooking. She told me that as a child you grow up with the way that food is cooked and how you prepare it and so does your spouse. As you start out your marriage you realize that you will need to change a few things on how things are prepared to accommodate the way your spouse likes it and pretty soon it is not the way either of you knew it growing up but a whole new thing.

I grew up eating fried rice the way that my mom prepares it. Jeff didn't grow up eating it at all but enjoyed it when I made it for him. Soon we were adding things to it to see how it would be. We tweaked it and did different things to it that we liked. Now it has some resemblance to what I use to make but it has definitely become our own version.

I think that the same holds true about relationships. We all come into marriage or any other relationship with our preconceived ideas on how it should be. But if it is going to truly work we need to put those down and see what works for us and how to make it the best that we can.

The Pioneer Woman

I have some favorite blogs that I visit throughout the week. Some of the blogs are of my friends and what is going on in their family. I love reading what other people are doing in their lives which makes blogs fun for me to read.

One of the blogs I read is one that I have been referred to several times. It is the Pioneer Woman. She has several sections to her blog that I find fascinating. There is a photography, home and garden, confessions and a cooking section. I love the way that she gives recipes. She walks you through the recipe step by step and taking pictures along the way. I have found some yummy recipes by browsing her blog.

Last night we tried one that just looked delicious. It is a Spicy Orange Garlic Shrimp recipe. It was even better than those pictures could describe. I have also tried her Onion Strings recipe.

Because He Lives

"I May Not Know What Tomorrow Brings
But I Know WHO Brings Tomorrow"

I was cleaning this morning and Mickey found a hymnal. I am great at collecting hymnals, you just never know when you are going to need one. Anyway, I was flipping through them and singing to the best of my ability. One of the songs that I came across was one of my favorites, "Because He Lives". When I read the chorus, I was reminded WHO I need to PUT MY TRUST IN.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth a living
Just because He lives.

Renaissance Fair

This past weekend we went to the local Renaissance Fair. I have been going every year since we moved here.

It is a fun place to look at the different booths and see different shows oh and eat good food. This year Mickey was able to pet a couple of different horses. I am amazed at how comfortable she is with animals. One of the horses was huge and Mickey kept calling him a "giant horse". She was able to jump in the jumping house and go down the slide. Last year she wasn't as confident as this year as she was tumbling and enjoying herself.

It is fun to see how much she has changed over the past couple of years.

I Voted

Election Day 2008. I hope you are going to vote or have voted already. I voted by absentee ballot since I wanted to make sure that I was not distracted while casting my vote.

So I bet you are curious who I am voting for. I was undecided for quite some time but finally came to a decision that I feel is the right one for me and my family. Curious yet? First let me tell you a story....

When I was about 8 or 9 my parents went down and placed their votes. I can't tell you what election they were voting for but for a child it seemed like it was important. What I can tell you is that politics was not discussed much in our house. My parents both had their views and what I knew is that they were not voting for the same person. I remember going to my dad afterward and asking him who he voted for. His answer would shape my life forever. His response to me was that "You never ask a person who they voted for because it was a private matter". I had a belief from that moment on that it must be against the law to ask who you are voting for. I was and often still am a rule follower.

I know now as an adult that you can share who it is you voted for. Just look around at all the signs and all the people talking about this vote. Some are definitely McCain fans and others are on the Obama side. I am sure that each and every person has a reason for why they voted for the way that they did. It may be because of their view on the war, or abortion or any other list of things that they are happy or unhappy about.

Maybe it is because of the length of this campaign has gone on, but I am a more informed voter this year. I have done my homework. So when casting my ballot I feel confident that I made a wise decision. I do hope that the tallying of the vote is not something that drags out for weeks or months. I am ready to move on toward our future whatever the case may be.

So who did I vote for? I am not telling, I still think that it is a private decision, although I don't think that it is illegal to ask.

As we were out and about on Friday night I was able to get a few pictures of our fun times. Mickey seemed to really get into the games. It is fun to see her enjoy things that last year were a little over her head.

Here is Daddy & Mickey going through
the pumpkin maze on a scooter of sorts.

We had a blast at the churches that hosted the Fall Fest. It is so nice to have a safe place to take out kiddos!

Fall Festivals

Mickey was true to form and did not get dressed up. She wore the same "costume" from yesterday and called it "Darby". I tried some different flowers for her face and she loved it. Here is a mommy tip for all who are interested.... Don't buy Halloween face paint to paint flowers on your child. It doesn't work because it just smears all over the place. Just go into your arts and crafts and get out that washable paint from Crayola and use that it works perfectly!

Then we went to a couple of churches that had Fall Festivals. She had fun playing the games and of course getting the candy. She did not know she was going to get candy so when she learned this piece of information she was on cloud nine. It was fun to see her get into the games this year. The only problem now is that she knows that she has candy so lets see how I can get rid of most of it without her knowing.

Now we are off to the Renaissance Festival today with Grammie Syl. I am sure we are going to be some tired folks after this weekend is over. But we will have fun doing it. I will be back with pictures of all of our fun!

Animal Ball

We made it the Animal Ball yesterday. I took out the face paints and Mickey was very intrigued about them. So I painted a flower a couple of balloons. After she saw herself in the mirror she declared herself to be Darby from Tigger and Pooh. She even did the Super Sleuths slogan. "Anytime, Anywhere, we are on the case!". Or something like that.

She was a little overwhelmed at the ball but had a decent time. She made a kazoo and a shaker. Here are a couple of pictures to share.

Have you heard of NaBloPoMo? It is the National Blog Posting Month, which happens to be in November. The challenge is to post a blog a day for the entire month of November. That looks like a daunting challenge, but it is one I am going to do my best to accomplish.

Oh and an update about the animal ball tonight which is just a couple of hours away and I have no idea what Mickey is going to do. I have a strong feeling that she is going to go as "Mickey the girl". Yeah no costume. But I have come to the conclusion that the goal is for her to have fun whether she is dressed up as a very cute Cinderella or Cat. My daughter is a girl that knows what she wants and is comfortable being who she is. So it is my job to go with the flow and we will all have a good time, right?

Annual Dress Up Day

At this point in my week I had hoped to come here and share with you what Mickey is going to dress up as. Sadly, at this point the answer is "I don't have any idea".

Yesterday for our music class she was supposed to go dressed up as Cinderella. She has been obsessed with this girl, Cinderelly. She wears the slippers almost everyday and has even worn the dress a few times around the house. Yesterday she saw the dress and decided that no the dress is evil. As far as I can tell from her reaction the dress was threatening to eat her up if she got near enough to the dress to actually wear it.

So what does a mom do? This mom had to think on her feet and put some overalls on her, put her cowboy hat on and put some freckles on her with my eyeliner. She was a cute although short lived.

We have our annual "Animal Ball" event tomorrow night. And thought I would be "creative" and make her into a cat. So I cut out some ears and bought some face paint. Oh I also found a tail for this cat idea. Just a side note Mickey is very into cats so "I thought" this would be a no brainer. So tonight I thought I introduce her to the idea. Which she promptly rejected. *sigh*

So I thought I would put on some whiskers on my face to try to sell the idea. Oh no! That was a bad bad idea. She reacted like I was some sort of monster. She told me "I don't like it" and then as we went into the bathroom to wash it off, she told me "It is not working momma" (to the idea of me as a cat). After she helped daddy wash the whiskers off my face she was much more relaxed.

The one thing that she liked about the cat outfit is the tail. She regularly wears tails and this just fit right into her area of comfort.

So what to do tomorrow? Will she go as a cat dressed up with as a little girl? She can meow and act like a cat but look like a regular little girl? Will she go as the first cowboy that sports a tail so that the animals are more comfortable with the cowboy? Will she put on that Cinderella dress? Will she put on the monkey George outfit from last year?

Do I have the only kid who thinks that dressing up is for the birds? Hmmm.... Who knows what we will do but I know that we will have fun at the animal ball even if she goes as Mickey.

Stories from Elbow Turkey

Mickey was a hit at my Grandma's house. It took her a bit for her "real" personality to shine through, but soon she was her energetic and loud self. She loved to go up to Grammie Rose (her namesake)and give her a tickle in the side. Grammie Rose thought that this was fun and kept giving Mickey an over the top reaction which of course continued the process.

Uncle Marc & Auntie Yvette came over and Mickey thought that Uncle Marc was "interesting". She wanted to get close but with that loud booming voice, well at times she thought he was "Scary Uncle Marc". At one time she decided that she would read her paper (comic book) like Uncle Marc. She thought he was fun up until Dani came around. Dani is Uncle Marc's daughter.

Dani came inside the house and Mickey immediately stopped looking at Uncle Marc and went to Dani. She had to sit right next to her. Pretty soon, Mickey had her back away from the entire room and was engaging Dani. Telling her that she liked her bangs, and telling her that "I missed you". Remember that Mickey doesn't remember her last visit with Dani that was at her 2nd birthday. At one point in time she turned and told me that "Dani has teeth". She was just so amazed at this girl that had come to visit her. She had to read to her. Then she had to have her hair and shoes on that were just like Dani.

The next morning she declared that Uncle Marc and Dani were coming to visit her. She sure did like her. Oh and when I was getting the pictures ready to post she looked at them and said "That's Dani!".

We also got to see Uncle Ton and Auntie Rita. She was very interested in Auntie Rita's fingernails. I had to remind Mickey that those fingernails were not for biting. Mickey has a nasty habit of biting her own fingernails. When she has no more fingernails to bite she comes looking for mine. Oh what joys of a motherhood. We have told her many times that biting your fingernails is yucky. This in her mind, even when she saw cousin Zay biting a toothpick that she couldn't see she proudly and boldly said "Out of your mouth that is yucky, SON". To which my cousin who is in his 20's said "Yes, MOM".

Mickey also got reacquainted with her Auntie Lin and Uncle Andy. When she saw Auntie Lin she excitedly exclaimed "My friend came to see me". What a little character.

So we had a great time visiting family. The only problem is that the visit was much too short and Jeff couldn't be there. So we are already looking forward to our next visit.
