60 Years

Last Sunday we took a trip up north to celebrate 60 years of marriage of my paternal grandparents. Due to life events I haven't seen most of this side of my family in a very, very long time. So it was good to reconnected with cousins that I have been trying to find for several years.

Ed & Sachi were married 60 years ago in May. They met in Japan when Ed was a GI a service man in the military. I wish I knew more of the story but I just don't. Maybe someday I will get that story. What I do know is that married, they moved to the United States, they raised 4 boys, lost one son when he was still a very young man and spent 60 years together. I am sure that their marriage was one of ups and downs, celebrations and grief and life.

To join them in their celebration were their 3 surviving sons,
their grandchildren,
new friends and long time friends.

One of the more endearing parts of the evening was when one of Sachi's friends got to sing a traditional Japanese songs and to do a traditional Japanese dance. Sachi and the two ladies above have been friends for a long time. It seems like the Japanese community always finds each other and their friendships stay strong.

In case you were wondering how Mickey did throughout this big event. She did just fine. She found herself some friends and joined right in the fun. She posed for pictures, picked flowers and overall enjoyed being one of the kids.

Words from Mickey

This morning: "Momma, I am awake because I am lying here thinking"
This evening: "Momma, I can't sleep now I am thinking"

Gym Day

We went to the gym today and Mickey had a grand time. Today her focus was on two objects that just made me smile on the inside. The first was a big ball. She loved rolling on it, rolling it and chasing it and laughing.

Soon she discovered some cones. I was trying to convince her that she could put them on the ground and create something to run around. But Mickey had a different idea. What was her idea?? They decided that the cones made a very neat cake. A Cinderella cake to be exact. She carried that thing everywhere with her today. Such a silly girl.

Her very good friend Mr. D and Ms. O were also at the gym today. Mr. D and Mickey are drawn together like magnets. His idea was that they should be jumping in the pit. Mickey was not interested. But Mr. D was not one to easily give up. He finally told her "we are going to jump in the pit today". He finally led her to the pit and she jumped in and played with Mr. D and Ms. O.

No Selling Please

I grew up far away from city life. My closest neighbor was 5 acres away. This meant that we didn't have anyone coming into my neighborhood and trying to sell me things. We didn't even get Trick-or-Treaters. So when I get someone knocking on my door and I open it to find someone trying to sell me something, I get annoyed.

When Mickey was about 6 months old, I got a vacuum sales guy come by the house. I felt sorry for the kid so I let him in and he vacuumed my living room. It seemed like he would NEVER leave. Finally, Jeff came home and politely asked for the young man to leave. So last week when I got another knock on my door and there was a man standing there telling me that he would shampoo a room in my house for free I declined. Even though I would love a room vacuumed, I just didn't want to be bothered.

Even though the vacuum and the shampoo guy were knocking on my door they were not as annoying as the college kid who is selling magazines is. UGH. I hate it when they knock on my door. They don't have the maturity level to take rejection and end up just bugging the stew out of me. I had one such visitor today. A young man that claimed that my neighbor across the street said I was nice and sent him my direction. (No neighbors across the street were home). He goes through his spill and I listen almost being able to repeat it because I have had many of his sort at my door. I tell him that I am not interested in ordering a magazine. I tell him thank you and hand it back. It is at this point where you see the maturity level at it's very best. This guy was like "don't thank me that is worse than saying no.". He storms off my porch with a huff and then remembers that he needs to ask which of my neighbors he should go to next. I don't give him a lead, why would I push him off on one of my neighbors?? I think that next time I just won't open the door.

I rarely get the kids that are selling something for school or for their girl scout troup. Now these kids I love to help out. I do help them out because I remember not liking to sell things as a kid but always having to. But I think that gone are the days of kids going through their neighbors selling something. It is just not safe anymore. So instead we are burden with these magazine sellers that are trying to earn some prize.

I just need to put a sign on my door telling them that I don't buy things from magazine sellers nor do I want my floor vacuumed. Do you think that will help?

Swim Class

We started swim classes today! She had a blast and as I am learning she loves trying new things and there is no fear!

Not sure who she is looking at.

She loved those new swim goggles!

trying out her kicking skills

waiting for her turn

Going on her back she wasn't so sure on this
nor with the head in the water. But it is just the first class.

When you are not looking

Mickey loves this time of year. Momma goes out and waters the garden and Mickey disappears to the back yard to torture, um play with the dogs. She is having a grand time and I am learning how to be a gardener. I am still not sure how the garden is actually going to be but am having fun learning.

So this morning I hear Mickey squealing and having an all around good time in the back yard. I am not entirely sure what she is up to but know that she is having fun. Then Mickey comes to me soaking wet because she decided to take a dip in the dogs water with her favorite dog Sierra. Even Sparky decided to join in on the fun.

At least she looks happy, right??

Sparky was soaking wet so I took an opportunity to give him a "bath" in the washing machine. Mickey did quite well with the whole thing. I told her that Sparky likes rollercoasters and that the washing machine was fun for him. I was very surprised when she agreed and felt that he would be okay. She even put him in the dryer when it was time. This is a long way from the time when she screamed and hollered when we put him in the dryer.

Today we start swim lessons. Mickey has been anticipating it all week and I think that she is going to have a blast. I will be back to let you know how it all goes. She goes to class all by herself. She keeps telling me she is a big girl.

Family Friends

When I think of my childhood I can name people who were important to me. Those people were normally my parents, brother and my extended family. My Grammie & Grandpo, my aunts and uncles and cousins. But there were also those people that were like family but were friends of my parents.

I was fortunate to be able to see and catch up a bit with one of those friends, a man named Lou. I remember as a kid he would show up to visit us in his red Volkswagen beetle. I loved that car! I even have a particular fondness for those cars today. Just ask my hubby. ;) It is nice to be able to be back in contact with him and to now introduce him to my daughter. We met up at my dad's parents anniversary (which I will write about soon).

Here is the photo with Lou and I.

Fun in the Sun

We bought Mickey a swimming pool for the yard on Sunday. The girl is a waterbug and would in the water 24/7 if we let her. Which is why we start swim lessons next week. I think that it is going to be a good time for her. She will be going in class all by herself because she is a big girl. She loves to be a big girl, well except for those times that she wants to be a baby and snuggle in my lap (which is fine by me).

On Sunday she went swimming 3 times but only 2 of those times were official. The last time we were out grilling some hamburgers and she was playing by the water. She kept getting closer and closer and soon she just stepped right in. Then she would throw things in that she just had to retrieve. Next thing I know she sat down and then she went for a swim. Silly girl, but isn't that what childhood is about taking advantage of the moment! I love this girl.

Tour of the Gila

It was almost 2 weeks ago that we headed up to see my mom and see the Tour of the Gila. Let me tell you that we had a blast! I had always wanted my hubby to see the races but due to scheduling conflicts this was the first year that we were able to go. And what a year to go! Lance Armstrong and his team which included Levi Leipheimer (who won the tour) and Floyd Landis. It was a great time had by all!

So on Saturday we headed out to the downtown area where the races are being held. It is a chance to be up close and personal with the race. Jeff was given the camera and got some amazing shots! Mickey had a fun time cheering for her racers. At one time she is cheering "Go bicycles, Go bicycles!" very loudly and very energetic. There was not an actual race going on at the time. But Lance Armstrong was taking a ride with some other riders up the street where we were at. He went up the street and back down all the while little Mickey is cheering her heart out. I look up and he is looking at her grinning ear to ear and having a bit of a chuckle. I was so involved in the moment that I didn't pick up the camera that was sitting on my lap.

I also was able to visit with some good friends. One is my friend Rob who I haven't seen in about 8 years. My goodness that is a long time. But considering we have been friends since we were in the 6th grade together and have stayed friends throughout so many years it was like we just saw each other yesterday. The next friend I got to see was Irene. She brought an added excited and energy when watching the race. How can you not enjoy a bike race with a gal that has a more than life size photo of Lance Armstrong in her hands??

On Sunday we headed up to Pinos Altos to see the end of the race and the reward ceremony! It was fun being at the finish line and watching as Lance came in 2nd for the days race. I had never been to this part of the race before so I had a grand time! Again, Jeff was able to get some great shots. We had fun and I am so glad that we were able to truly enjoy our weekend.

Be in More Pictures

I have been MIA. I have a good reason I promise. I am getting ready for a yard sale which means that this saver needs to become a giver. I keep things that I am do not completely understand the reason as to why I keep things. So the fact that I am going through my kitchen, closets and so many other areas is completely unnatural to me. My house is a mess with piles of stuff but I am hoping that getting rid of the clutter will be a good thing.

But that is not the reason for this post. I am a frequent blog reader and I read one today that made me think and agree with. This is a mom and photographer who is urging us to be in more pictures with our children. We are going to cherish those photographs so much in the future. I am guilty of this and have many excuses but I think that no matter what those excuses are not really valid reasons. So I am going to try to follow this ladies advice and take more photos with Mickey. Here is the post I think that you should read this. Thank you Miz Booshay!

Tomorrow I will share my pictures of the Tour of the Gila!

Love of Horses

We went to my mom's this past weekend to see the Tour of the Gila. We took plenty of pictures of Lance Armstrong, Kristen Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, an Floyd Landis. We also got some great shots of Mickey cheering on the cyclists!

We were also invited over to the home of a friend of mine. Sharon has a horse named Cammy and Sharon offered to take Mickey on a horse ride. Can I tell you that was a very generous offer and made the entire weekend for my little horse lover! My child has no fear let me tell you. She loved the horse and was in heaven. But you can't tell that from this picture or can you?

then there is this one ...

this last one was where Sharon took her on ride up the hill.
Mickey thought it was a little scary but had a grand time!

Flying Solo

Jeff has been out of town this week on business. So it has just been Mickey and I. So I guess I am not really solo. So that is the reason for my absence. It is not really because I don't have anything to say it is just been distracted elsewhere this week.

Last Saturday we made our way to B&N for their story hour since we learned that there was going to be a special visitor or two there.

First there was Mr. Moo Cow
from Chick a lay (chick-fil-a)

Then there was Pooh Bear
Can you just see the pure awe in her face. She has never wanted to get close to animated characters before. Actually you could just see her shaking in her shoes when she saw the likes of the Easter Bunny or Santa at the Mall. But Pooh Bear, is an all together a different story. I didn't think that I was going to be able to tear her away from him.

She how she just parked herself right in the middle of her new buds.

Also this week Mickey made some strawberry shortcake. This girl loves fruit and strawberries are not exception. I thought for awhile we were not going to have enough strawberries because she was eating them so fast as I was cutting them up. But alas, we made enough and she had her strawberry shortcake. And yes, she is still a dancer in her swimming suit (on those moments she is not a princess or a dog). :)

We are also still trying to make a go of this garden. I have to say that I am very grateful for all those farmers out there that work hard to put food on our tables. I think that if it were left to me to grow our own food we just might starve. But we are looking at our gardening experience as a learning and growing one that will help for further endeavors. So we are trying again with Mickey's seeds that I put out to early. So we bought another round of pumpkin, watermelon and sunflower seeds. I am happy to report that the cantaloupe that I have started from seeds outdoors are not coming up. Hopefully we will get some nice melons out of it, since they are Mickey's favorite.

So hopefully that is a good post with some pictures to hold you over until I get back from our short weekend trip home. We are going to see the Tour of the Gila. It is a bike race and Lance Armstrong is racing there. Every year we hear rumors that he will be there and they are just that rumors. But this year he is actually there. I was never really into bike races until we got cable for the first time and my hubby was able to watch the Tour de France. We have been watching it every year for 5 or so years. So this is pretty fun but is probably more exciting for my hubby who actually ridden in a century ride. I will be sure to take lots of pictures to share.

Please Pray for my friend Bobby

I am writing to ask that you pray for a friend of mine. His name is Bobby and he is in the ICU awaiting a heart transplant. The doctors hope that there will be heart that will be a match with him in the next 5 days. If not they will put a device in him that will do the work that his heart is supposed to do. He will not leave the hospital until he receives a transplant. He is very young 3o years old and much too young to be facing this. He has a family history as his mother passed away 3 years ago from issues with her heart. His brother also has issues. So please add him to your prayer list and if you are willing ask others to pray for him. I would appreciate it greatly! I will keep you informed on what is going on with him.
